Generative Engine Optimization: What Enterprise Content Teams Should Do
There is no secret markup for AI answers. Visibility begins with useful, original, crawlable content that states evidence clearly and earns trust across traditional and generative search.
Build content worth retrieving
Google’s guidance for generative AI features emphasizes the same foundation as search: unique, valuable, non-commodity content created for people. Publish first-hand experience, original frameworks, decisions, examples, evidence, and limitations that another generic summary cannot supply. Avoid producing many near-duplicate pages for every possible query variation.
Answer a specific audience’s decision. Clear headings, concise definitions, direct explanations, tables or checklists where useful, and descriptive titles make content easier for people and systems to understand.
Make authority and evidence explicit
Use accurate bylines, author or organization background, publication and modification dates, citations to primary sources, and clear editorial disclosure. Distinguish reported facts from the publisher’s analysis. Correct material errors transparently and keep time-sensitive pages current only when the content actually changes.
Use Article or NewsArticle structured data to describe the page accurately, not to manufacture authority. Maintain canonical URLs, crawlable HTML, internal links, XML sitemaps, useful images where relevant, and a strong page experience across devices.
Measure the full discovery path
Use Search Console to monitor queries, pages, clicks, impressions, position, indexing, and sitemap health. Segment branded, problem, industry, and decision-stage topics. Analytics can show engaged visits and conversions, but some AI experiences may send fewer or differently attributed clicks.
Judge content by qualified discovery, citations, engagement, assisted conversions, and commercial relevance, not page count. Improve pieces that match real audience needs and retire or consolidate pages that add no distinct value.
Leadership checklist
- Publish original experience and decision-useful analysis.
- Structure pages for readers with clear headings and direct answers.
- Show authorship, dates, evidence, sources, and editorial process.
- Keep pages crawlable, canonical, internally linked, and measured in Search Console.
